Kalamity

Kalamity is Oxer Bastegieta's most celebrated red wine, blending old vineyards from two distinct Rioja sub-zones: a century-old, three-hectare plot in Cárdenas, Rioja Alta, at 580 metres on iron-rich clay, and a 96-year-old hectare in Elvillar, Rioja Alavesa, at 600 metres on calcareous clay. Fifty percent Tempranillo and 47% Garnacha, with small additions of Viura and Garnacha Blanca, the best grapes from each plot are vinified separately in 500-litre French oak barrels and concrete egg with indigenous yeasts before a 12-month blend decision. The result is complex and persistent: dark berry fruit, violets, spice and animal depth, with remarkable minerality and length. Just 1,960 bottles made.
