The Marche is one of Italy's most underrated wine regions: a long coastal strip between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine mountains that produces whites and reds of real character. Azienda Agraria Guerrieri is a family farm in the Metauro Valley near Pesaro and Urbino: solar-powered, farming their own wheat, olives, and honey alongside the vines, and bottling wines that have made them a Maltese favourite.
Two grapes define the estate. Bianchello del Metauro is a rare indigenous white variety grown only in the hills surrounding the Metauro River: fresh, floral, and mineral, perfect with the seafood that the Adriatic coast inspires. The Celso Superiore version adds more concentration and structure to a grape that rewards those who seek it out. On the red side, the Guerriero Nero blends Sangiovese, Montepulciano, and Cabernet Sauvignon for a full-bodied, velvety everyday red, while the Galileo Riserva: twelve months in large oak, twelve more in the bottle, is the estate's statement wine: ripe berries, firm tannins, and a long, spiced finish.
Briffa Wine Selections sources Guerrieri directly, and the blog post exploring their story remains one of the most read on the site.
